Masturbation is still a taboo subject. Yet, who hasn’t already given a helping hand to their own pleasure? Or even a helping hand to a friend? This direct path to pleasure is a hot topic. And it is practiced by both men and women. So here are 11 facts about masturbation that will surprise you (or not).

In 2021, the sex toy manufacturer Tenga conducted a survey on masturbation. The results were surprising. Solo pleasure (or with others) arouses much desire. If you already know the subject inside out, some information might still surprise you. And you won’t be the only one, since 8 out of 10 French people regularly enjoy this moment of relaxation and pleasure.
1 – Masturbation: practiced by 92% of French men and 72% of French women
If there is a small difference between men and women, there is however no notable difference in frequency between the various generations. When it comes to pleasure, there is no age limit.
2 – Masturbation is more common among LGBT+ people
We love to lend a helping hand in the LGBT% community. Masturbation is an integral part of sexual practices, as 94% of them masturbate compared to 81% among heterosexuals. Here, we don’t shy away from pleasure.
3 – In summer, the French are hot
It is indeed in July, when temperatures are very high, that libidos let loose. There is indeed a link between heat, bare bodies, and naughty desires. Does this surprise you?
4 – The best time slot: 7:30 PM – 11:30 PM
Much better than a Netflix evening, masturbation. Or else, we do it in front of Netflix, one hand in the panties or briefs and a drink in the other. Well, honestly, we don’t know the details but we like to touch ourselves in the evening.

5 – The French fantasize about their previous partners nearly twice as much as about their current one
But that doesn’t mean you want to get back together with your ex! We often tend to romanticize the past, which helps when pleasuring yourself solo or with others. And besides, it’s not an absolute truth, especially since it also doesn’t mean you’re fantasizing about an ex throughout the entire encounter. As long as you’re not shouting their name at the moment of orgasm…
6 – Sex toys more popular among young people
Although sex toys have gained significant popularity among older generations, 51% of Millennials (born 1980-99) use them. Meanwhile, only 30% of seniors do. However, a winning point for the LGBT+ community, with 64% of users compared to 40% among heterosexuals.
7 – Why a sex toy? Because…
Better quality and frequency of orgasm. Better sexual and masturbation experiences. Better sexual performance. More satisfying emotional connections with their partner. And we understand, when we see that few women have orgasms naturally with their partners, adding a sex toy spices things up and makes it easier to reach seventh heaven. Who could blame them?!
8 – 64% of French people say they use masturbation as self-care
When you know the benefits of masturbation, it’s no surprise. For many, masturbating is much more relaxing than going for a walk or doing sports. Better too than meditation, yoga, or any form of stretching. And no comparison with drinking tea or reading. In short, onanism is almost an activity in its own right and is good for the body and mind.
9 – Masturbation allows you to discover your body
For men, it is more often practiced among friends (12% versus 5% for women). While women often tend to discover it alone (61% versus 49% for men). But once you have discovered the practice, it is very hard not to indulge in it.

10 – The most fantasized stars in France are …
The female personalities who provoke desire are: Clara Morgane, Shakira, Angelina Jolie.
On the male side: Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Bradley Cooper.
Do you confirm?
11 – The English are fonder of solitary pleasure than the French
The French are often labeled as perverts or « hot, » especially with the French Kiss, but in the end, our neighbors are no better. Indeed, according to the study, only 49% of French people masturbate at least once a week, compared to 61% of the English. We have doubts about the veracity of these revelations, but… that’s what the study says!
METHODOLOGY
In partnership with PSB, TENGA surveyed over 10,000 participants in 9 different countries to understand and better comprehend sexual habits, masturbation practices, and the use of sex toys worldwide. To ensure a representative sample of 18-54 year olds, on each market questionnaire, PSB implemented quotas and evaluated the collected data to best match each country’s statistics, all sorted by age and gender. The questionnaire was distributed – and the final data was evaluated – based on an overall demographic approach by country (age, gender, ethnicity, residence, etc.).
