Both men and women suffer from thrush

Gout is a common yeast infection that affects both men and women. It is usually harmless, but it can be uncomfortable and keep coming back. It is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

Check to see if you have the thrush.

Symptoms in women

  • White vaginal discharge (often like cottage cheese), which usually does not smell
  • itching and irritation around the vagina
  • pain and tingling during sexual intercourse or when peeing

Symptoms in men

  • irritation, burning and redness around the head of the penis and under the foreskin
  • white waste (such as cottage cheese)
  • an unpleasant odor
  • difficulty pulling the foreskin

Other parts of the body

The rash can affect other areas of the skin, such as the underarms, groin, and between the fingers. This usually causes a red, irritating, or painful rash that turns to white or yellow discharge. The rash may not be as obvious on darker skin. Sometimes the rash causes no symptoms.

Sexual health clinics can help with thrush

Sexual health clinics treat problems of the genital organs and urinary system. Many sexual health clinics offer no appointment service, where you do not need an appointment. They will often get test results faster than general surgery.

During coronavirus, call a sexual health clinic if you need help or advice.

What happens at your appointment?

The general practitioner or sexual health clinic will want to confirm that it is a thrush and rule out other infections.

If that’s not clear, it’s the walnut:

  • a doctor or nurse may examine your vagina, penis or skin
  • a cotton swab can be wiped on the landfill to test for other infections

Treatment of moss

You will usually need an antifungal medicine to get rid of the thrush, this may be a tablet you take, a tablet you insert into your vagina (pessarium) or a cream to relieve the irritation.

The thrush should disappear within 7 to 14 days of starting treatment.

You do not need to treat partners unless they show symptoms.

Recurrent fever

You may need to take treatment for longer (up to 6 months) if you continue to get thrush (you get it more than 4 times in 12 months).A general practitioner or a sexual health clinic can help you determine if something is causing your thrush, such as your periods or sexual intercourse. They will recommend how often you should use the treatment.

A pharmacist can also help

You can buy antifungal medicines from pharmacies if you’ve been diagnosed with thrush and know the symptoms. A pharmacist can recommend the best treatment. Ask them if they have a private space to talk if you’re embarrassed.

However, you should not use an antifungal medicine more than twice in 6 months without talking to a pharmacist or doctor.

What are the causes of thrush?

Measles is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI), but it can be triggered by sex. It is caused by a fungus called candida which is normally harmless. Also, it tends to grow in hot and humid conditions and grows if the balance of bacteria changes.

This may happen if:

  • your skin is irritated or damaged
  • are you taking antibiotics?
  • Or you have diabetes that’s not well controlled.
  • you have a weakened immune system (e.g. due to HIV or chemotherapy)
  • you are undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Well, you’re pregnant now.
