Intersex (or inter-gender) - A general term used to refer to a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not fit the typical definitions of female or male. Sometimes a female or male sex is surgically assigned to an intersex person at birth, if the external genitalia are not clearly male or female. Intersex babies are always assigned a legal sex. But sometimes, when they grow up, they do not identify with the sex chosen for them. Some intersex people are transgender, but intersex does not necessarily mean transsexual.
Intersex is a term that encompasses many things because it defines a person who does not really fit into the female or male boxes, whether it is sexual, hormonal, biological, ... There are several levels of intersexuality (chromosomes, hormones or anatomy) but in short, the person is born with the attributes of both sexes.
