Yes, it exists. And no, its not a joke taken from a Florence Foresti sketch.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is it hyphallophobia?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The word comes from the Greek <i>ithys<\/i> (\u00a0straight\u00a0\u00bb) and <i>phallos<\/i> (\u00a0phallus\u00a0\u00bb) \u2014 so far, so good \u2014 combined with <i>phobos<\/i>, fear.<br \/>\n<b>Ithyphallophobia<\/b> is therefore literally the <b>irrational fear of an erect penis.<\/b> This phobia affects both women and men.<br \/>\nFor some, its the sight (or even just the mention) of erect genitalia that triggers immediate anxiety; for others, its the contact or the idea of sexual intercourse.<\/p>\n<p>Reactions can range from nervous tension to panic attacks. Palpitations, cold sweats, nausea, trembling, feelings of disgust or oppression: the body reacts as if facing imminent danger.<br \/>\nIn short, for those who suffer from it, its not a laughing matter, but a <b>real psychological suffering<\/b>, often very isolating.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2><b>\u00a0But\u2026 how does one get there?\u00a0\u00bb<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Most of the time, this fear <b>doesnt come from nowhere<\/b>.<br \/>\nIt finds its roots in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>A sexual trauma<\/b>, often in childhood: molestation, assault, <a ><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>exhibitionism<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u2026 An erect penis seen too early, in a violent or shameful context, can become an image engraved in the brain, associated with fear and disgust.<\/li>\n<li><b>A guilt-trip education<\/b>: some cultures or religions still associate sexuality with sin, dirtiness or shame. The child grows up with the idea that a desirable body is a \u00a0bad\u00a0\u00bb body.<\/li>\n<li><b>Family or social taboos<\/b>: people dont talk about desire, let alone pleasure. Result: when it emerges, its a red alert.<\/li>\n<li><b>In some men<\/b>, repressed homosexuality or fear of their own desire can also cause this phobia.<\/li>\n<li><b>In women<\/b>, its often coupled with <b>genophobia<\/b> (fear of the sexual act) or <b>vaginismus<\/b> (involuntary contraction of the vagina making penetration painful).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And to make matters worse, society continues to <a ><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>maintain an image of the \u00a0performing\u00a0\u00bb and \u00a0dominant\u00a0\u00bb male sex<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Enough to accentuate the feeling of threat rather than attraction.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2><b>When the body says \u00a0no\u00a0\u00bb<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Phobia is not just a mental phenomenon: it becomes physical.<br \/>\nIn women, this can translate into <b>physical pain<\/b>, a total blockage or inability to let go.<br \/>\nIn men, it can cause <b>avoidance of intimacy<\/b>, even a secondary erectile dysfunction \u2014 the anxiety about erection ending up\u2026 preventing erection.
