When you’re in encounter mode, all sorts of information is collected, knowingly or unknowingly. We’ve talked to body language experts to interpret common body language and enable you to pay attention to certain details. It really is like a superpower – use it wisely.

1 – An eyebrow raise

There are several types of eyebrow lift, and each conveys a different message. One of the most interesting is the eyebrow raised with a smile. We use it when we enter a room or see people we like. But a brief raise of the eyebrows can indicate “I like what I see and want more. ”

2 – A nervous movement

When we love someone, it makes us a little nervous and our heart beats rapidly. This, coupled with other signs such as nervous laughter, sweating hands and the inability to sit still for any length of time can be collectively described as restlessness. We like to try and keep control of our emotions.

So when a person has trouble doing this, it may be because they’re nervous and excited. On a first date, this could be a good thing. This may not be the case if you’ve been seeing each other for a long time. This may indicate that what you’re talking about or the situation you’re in is making them fidget because they’re not comfortable.

3 – Eye contact

If your date maintains good eye contact and sometimes drops his or her gaze to look at your mouth before looking into your eyes, this could be a very positive sign. It’s a sure sign that someone is attracted to you, and more specifically, thinking about kissing you.

That said, eye contact can be overdone. One study shows that, on average, unblinking eye contact that lasted longer than 3.2 seconds was inappropriate. However, subjects were comfortable with a longer duration if they felt the actors appeared trustworthy rather than threatening.

4 – Mirror movements

Mirroring movements are a natural and permanent part of every human interaction. People tend to do it when they feel comfortable and like themselves, and it’s when someone doesn’t match up with you that it can mean something. It could mean they’re uncomfortable with themselves, or it could mean they have something they’re hiding because the cognitive load required to lie is high.

5 – A lick

It seems that lip licking is a sign of anticipation: we lick our lips when we see something we want. It could mean they’re hungry for you. When you’re attracted to someone, your mouth produces more saliva. In response, they might quickly lick their lips or press them together. But this can also be a lie, so watch out for body language that can have double meanings!

6 – Show your best side

A person who waits is trying both to attract attention and to present themselves in the best possible light. When we’re interested in someone or are self-conscious, our sympathetic nervous system hits hard to allow us to release the tension. Simply put, we want to be noticed and we take care of ourselves so that others will notice us. So there are secrets we shouldn’t reveal

7 – See the signals of desire

People tend to turn towards what they desire and away from what doesn’t interest them. An approach would unconsciously indicate a desire to literally get closer to the other person.

9 – Turn towards the other

“Directional body positioning”: if someone wants to leave a conversation, they’ll usually head in a different direction to the person they’re talking to. If this isn’t noticed, they’ll start to tilt their upper torso. And, in doing so, they will move backwards to unconsciously demonstrate a lack of interest.

10 – Blushing can be a sign of sexual interest

Blushing occurs when the sympathetic nervous system dilates the small vessels in the face and body. Interestingly, women tend to blush five to six times more than men. Blushing is a clear indicator of potential sexual interest. Of course, blushing is also a sign of shyness, shame and anger, … So make sure your beauty and charm are what brings out those rosy cheeks and not a tin ear prick.
