Arrival in Los Angeles
Milena Markovna Kunis, known as Mila Kunis, was born on August 14, 1983 in Chernivtsi, Ukraine. Her mother is a physics teacher and runs a pharmacy. Her father is a mechanical engineer and works as a cab driver. Despite their relatively good situation, the parents decided to leave the USSR in 1991. They felt there was no future for their 2 children (she also has a brother 6 years her senior). The treatment of Jews in the former USSR was another reason for their departure. Mila had been raised Jewish. They settled in Los Angeles, with very little money and a very unstable professional situation, since their diplomas were not transferable to the United States.
An early start as an actress
She began taking acting lessons at the age of 9, and landed a role in a Barbie commercial on her very first audition. She went on to appear in a number of TV series, including Alerte à Malibu, Sept à la maison and Des jours et des vies. In 1998, she lied about her age (she was only 14 at the time) in order to play Jackie Burkhart on That 70’s Show. All actors had to be at least 18. The series was a great success, lasting 8 seasons. So, like Robin Wright, she owes her success to a TV series.
Mila Kunis’ career
She went on to play a number of roles in films that received mixed reviews from the critics, and even in films that were released directly on DVD. It was only 2 years after the end of the series (in 2008), that she landed a role in Judd Apatow’s comedy “Without Sarah, Nothing’s Right”. It was a critical success and a box-office smash. It was this film that really launched her film career. The same year, she starred in the blockbuster “Max Payne”, adapted from the video game of the same name, alongside Mark Wahlberg. Despite being well received in cinemas, her performance was criticized, as was the film itself. She then starred in Mike Judge’s film Extract. She then starred opposite Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman in the action film The Book of Eli. She also appeared in the comedy Crazy Night, alongside Steve Carell and Tina Fey.
A film that won him an Oscar
But in 2010 she was most noticed for her role as Natalie Portman’s rival in Darren Aronofsky’s critically acclaimed (and 5-time Oscar winner) psychological thriller Black Swan. She underwent drastic physical preparation, taking dance classes 4 hours a day, 7 days a week, and following a strict diet that saw her lose over 9 kilos.
She then returned to a lighter register in 2011 with the comedy “Sexe entre amis” alongside Justin Timberlake. The chemistry between the two works perfectly on screen. The film was a critical and commercial success. Her energy and screen presence were acclaimed, and the romantic comedy genre suited her perfectly. She will continue in this vein. Mila Kunis follows up with the comedy Ted with Mark Wahlberg, directed by Seth MacFarlane.
She then moves on to Hollywood productions expected in 2013. Notably with The Fantastic World of Oz. But she also worked on more ambitious projects that weren’t necessarily as successful as expected. These include Blood Ties, Guillaume Canet’s first American film, and Paul Haggis’ Puzzle. But it was undoubtedly his decision to star in Lana and Andy Wachowski’s blockbuster “Jupiter: The Fate of the Universe” in 2015. In fact, the film was a flop and was poorly received by critics.
In 2016, she chose to return to potty comedy with Bad Moms. The film was a huge success, and a sequel followed a year later. She will also star in L’espion qui m’a larguée (The Spy Who Dumped Me) in 2018.
Private life
In her private life, Mila Kunis dated Macaulay Culkin (the famous kid from Mommy Missed the Plane) for 8 years. The beautiful brunette found it hard to cope with being in a relationship with someone so famous. After their breakup in 2011, the actress will be seen in the company of Ashton Kutcher. The latter is none other than her That 70’s show partner, with whom she shared her first kiss. They married after 3 years together. They welcomed their first child in 2014, then a second in 2016. They manage to live far from the paparazzi, and seem to have found a recipe for success, since their relationship is still going strong.
