A destiny that’s almost a foregone conclusion..
Born in Paris on September 30, 1975, Marion Cotillard is the daughter of two actors, raised with her two younger twin brothers, Guillaume and Quentin, in Paris. Her parents quickly instilled in her a taste for acting, as she appeared in numerous theatrical productions during her childhood, working alongside her mother.
During her teenage years, Marion Cotillard was torn between singing and acting, but decided to follow the path of the cinema. She made her debut with Arnaud Desplechin(Comment je me suis disputé… ma vie sexuelle in 1996) and Coline Serreau(La Belle Verte, id.), but soon became a household name thanks to her role as Lilly, a fiancée fed up with the absences of her chauffeur boyfriend Samy Naceri in Taxi (1998). As a result, she was nominated for a César for Best New Actress. It was the beginning of her rise to success.
In her private life, the actress has been in a relationship with Guillaume Canet since 2007. The couple gave birth to a little Marcel, in May 2011. In September 2016, the actress announced that she was expecting a second child. On March 10, 2017, the family expanded with the birth of a baby girl named Louise.
Her first big successes..
Cab 2 (2000), which sold over ten million tickets in France, further consolidated the young actress’s popularity. She then played the dual role of twin sisters in Les Jolies Choses (2001), based on the novel by Virginie Despentes. It was a difficult performance. She learned to sing in record time. A winning bet. She was rewarded with another César nomination for “Best Emerging Actress” and a great public success.
2003 was a particularly busy year for the young woman, who starred in three films: the expected success of Taxi 3, the surprise success of Jeux d’enfants opposite Guillaume Canet, and the American success of Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton.
… Followed by others
For her portrayal of Tina Lombardi, a vengeful dark angel in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Un Long Dimanche de fiançailles , she won the César for Best Supporting Actress.
Carried away by a veritable bulimia for filming, this convinced environmentalist successively starred in the drama Cavalcade, the romantic comedy Ma Vie en l’air, in which she plays a rather liberated radio hostess, Abel Ferrara’s Mary alongside Juliette Binoche, and the thriller La Boîte noire. Initially announced for the cast of Le Concile de pierre alongside Monica Bellucci, Marion Cotillard was forced to abandon this project to join Ridley Scott on his wine odyssey Une Grande Année.
She finally gets the role of a lifetime: that of Edith Piaf, in La Môme , directed by Olivier Dahan. The film’s worldwide success led Marion Cotillard to win the Golden Globe for Best Actress, as well as a BAFTA, a César and the Hollywood grail, the Oscar for Best Actress.
Hollywood opens its doors to her
On the strength of this new success, Marion Cotillard became one of the most sought-after actresses. She made a lasting impact in the United States. She followed this up with Public Ennemies , alongside Johnny Depp, and the musical Nine.
Our beautiful brunette is twice in front of Christophe Nolan’s camera, shooting Inception alongside Leonardo Dicaprio. This was followed by Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, in which she played Miranda Tate in 2012. A little earlier, it was under the direction of her partner Guillaume Canet that she landed a role in Les Petits Mouchoirs. A year later, she gave birth to their son Marcel.
An award-winning career
In 2013, she was nominated for a César for Best Actress, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her role as a young disabled woman in the film De Rouille et d’os. The same year, she starred in Blood Ties, her partner’s new film and the American version of Les Liens du Sang. She also made a strong impression in James Gray’s The Immigrant .
In 2015, her role in Deux jours, une nuit saw her nominated for the second time in her career at the Oscars in the Best Actress category. Her journey to the United States doesn’t stop there. Marion Cotillard was cast in Assasin’s Creed , scheduled for release at the end of 2016.
She continued her run in 2017 with Les Fantômes d’Ismaël and Rock’n’Roll. She promoted them via social networks with her husband. They teased each other on Instagram, displaying their complicity as strong as ever. 2018 was marked by Gueule d’ange to follow in 2019 Nous finirons ensemble. If you’re a fan, you won’t want to miss seeing her again on your screens.
